“The Woods Are Lovely, Dark And Deep…”

December 9, 2016 | Amy McMillan

Winter has arrived and that means it’s time to bundle up and head to your Genesee County Parks, because they’re just as much fun in cold weather as they are when it’s hot out.

All those trails you love to walk when it’s warm offer new adventures this time of year including a look at the otherwise secret lives of many creatures that make the Parks their home. A light covering of snow will reveal the telltale tracks of our shy winter residents. From the tiniest mice and chickadees to rabbits, fox, and deer, you can see what they were up to in the hours before you shared their parkland paths.

Listen for the clear drumming of a woodpecker in search of bugs or the call of a hawk overhead. Drink in the special stillness of this season and the gentle music of nothing more than wind moving across meadows and the last of the leaves falling to the ground.

When the snow is at least three inches deep, many of the Parks are open for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. For energetic outdoor enthusiasts, each offers a unique way to explore the parks and to fall in love with winter all over again. And for the brave and bold, there is the thrill of Toboggan Hill.

Check the Genesee County Parks website for maps, park hours, snow conditions, and the best places for you to experience winter your way.

Get away, right away, and discover the 11,000 acres of winter wonderlands that are your Genesee County Parks!
