Moving Westward - a Growing Nation May 23 - 25 Experience life as families moved westward. Explore cultivated fields and gardens throughout the Village, and mine for gold at the Grist Mill. Visit an early pioneers’ camp in the apple orchard. Explore Native American culture, and learn how travelers survived the wilderness by using what the land provided.
The Sounds of Music May 30 and 31 Enjoy the sounds of yesteryear with folksinger Neil Woodward performing in the Fox House. Whistle a tune on your way to the Stanley School House, where you’ll learn how to write music notes, then stop on by the Print Shop, which has the latest in sheet music for you. Take a spin on the 1912 Parker Carousel accompanied by its melodious Band Organ. Even the Blacksmith is hammering out a note!
Communication 1800s Style June 6 and 7 Communicate as your ancestors did in the late 1800s. At the Stanley School House you can learn all about the dots and dashes of Morse Code and how to write your name in it. Listen for whistle blows that identify different trains, while the train conductor tells you about the language of the rails.
American Heritage and Family Life June 13 and 14 Learn how to identify the age and history of buildings by their architecture, beginning with the homes, shops and trades buildings in the villages. After tending a garden at the Salter Log Cabin and pumping water to wash your hands, try weaving a rug. Then take a seat at the Stanley School House and attend a primer on genealogy.
Battle of Shiloh Filming comes to Crossroads Village June 20 and 21 This summer Signature Productions will stage scenes from the Battle of Shiloh at Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad on June 20, 21, 24 and 25. The scenes will depict the impact on the nearby railroad town of Corinth, for a National Park Service movie. Shiloh was one of the bloodiest contests of the Civil War. Each side lost more than 10,000 soldiers. You are welcome to watch this production during your visit to Crossroads Village, but be aware that the scenes will be realistic and may be unsettling.
An Old Village Wedding June 20 and 21 Be our guest! Join in as the Village prepares for and holds an old-time wedding. Learn old-time wedding traditions that continue today, and enjoy vintage-style receptions on Saturday and Sunday.
Gardens in Thyme June 27 and 28 Learn from the Michigan State Master Gardeners and the Genesee County Herb Society how our ancestors used plants to add warmth, fragrance, health and beauty to their country life. Cooking and craft demonstrations, too!
Independence Day Festival July 4 and 5 On July 4, celebrate this grand country with a parade and an ice cream social. On July 5, continue the celebration with lots of all-American activities.
Living Off The Land July 11 and 12 Enjoy an earth-friendly weekend with demonstrations of century-old canning and cooking techniques, plus “green” alternatives for everyday tasks, and recipes for tasty treasures such as gourmet butters and lavender cookies. This is an earth-friendly program that will offer you new ideas about cooking, cleaning and gardening that are environmentally sensitive and can save you money!
Clothing, Comfort and Crafts July 18 and 19 Try reusing old clothes to make a crazy quit, a woven placemat or rug – even a work of art! Children will have fun at the Eldridge House learning to sew and making a doll shirt or tiny blanket.
Huckleberry Backyard Jam July 25 and 26 Crossroads Village is alive with the sounds of musicians from near and far, including our very own Neil Woodward. Enjoy street performances in front of the Attica Hotel and Café, and follow the notes upstairs to the Colwell Opera House for a special acoustical show. Getting hungry? Be sure to drop by the Buzzell Garden to partake of homemade biscuits and jam
Railfans August 1 and 2 This weekend is all about trains! Celebrate our famous Huckleberry Railroad with tours and demonstrations, model trains, and tours of our Train Shop, which is only open to the public on this weekend. Stop by the Saw Mill to hear several train whistles blown, and learn why they have different sounds. Meet members of railroad clubs, societies and museums will display their train treasures impart helpful tips to keep you safe near the tracks.
Artisans…Necessity is the mother of invention August 8 and 9 Our ancestors were creative people and so are the Village’s artisans, who will demonstrate old-time skills such as tinwork, leather craft, gardening and loom weaving. Try you hand at art, too, and while you’re sipping cider at the mill, learn what happens to the pressed apples left over from making cider.
Day Out With Thomas™ August 20 ~ 22, 27 ~ 29, 2010 Our beloved storybook character visits the Village with his friends for six full days. This is a special treat for children, complete with train rides, storytelling, live music and so much fun! Click here for more information.
Meet the Smiths and Millers August 29 and 30 Meet the skilled tradespeople at the Village who hammer out horseshoes, grind grain and punch tin into pretty decorations just as it was done in Genesee County 100 years ago. The Smiths and Millers are more than good neighbors…learn about the important roles they play in this village. And keep an eye out for Jacob Smith, the founder of Flint, who will be strolling about town!
Grange Fair September 5 and 6 Bid farewell to summer with rides, square dancing and old-fashioned fun. Help judge goods entered in the Grange Fair Contest, and try your skills in seed spitting, sack races, and Egg Toss. Say hello of the village farm animals on your way to the Salter Log Cabin, where you can help tend a garden and learn how to weave on a loom.
